Timed Out: Art and the Transnational Caribbean

Dr Leon Wainwright is Lecturer in Art History at The Open University and a member of the editorial board of the journal Third Text and founding editor of the OU’s Open Arts Journal. He is the co-editor, with Charles Harrison and Paul Wood, of the forthcoming volume in the series Art in Theory: An Anthology of Changing Ideas (Wiley Blackwell). He was External Curator in 2010 of the exhibition Aubrey Williams: Atlantic Fire at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and from 2012-13 he will lead the project ‘Disturbing Pasts: Memories, Controversies and Creativity’, funded by the European Science Foundation and the Museum of Ethnology, Vienna.

Timed out is a pioneering study of modern and contemporary art in the aftermath of empire. It addresses the current ‘global turn’ in the study of art by way of the transnational Caribbean, offering an in-depth account of its integral role in histories of art in the Atlantic world. The book looks at why art of the Anglophone Caribbean and its diaspora has been placed not only ‘outside’ but ‘behind’ more familiar and dominant art canons, and how the politics of space and time can be engaged in new ways to rethink the global geography of art.

On the occasion of its launch, inIVA, London, will host a panel discussion to address some the issues raised in ‘Timed Out’, followed by a drinks reception and launch. 2nd May, 6.30pm. The event will be recorded by The Open University for its digital platform, www.openartsarchive.org
