University of the Air, An arts project celebrating research at the OU

Wales: Steve Geliot, Jo Fong, Tanja Råman – ‘Trajectory’

In September 1963, Harold Wilson launched the idea of the 'University of the Air' which became The Open University (OU), receiving its Royal Charter in 1969. To celebrate the role of research at the OU, an innovative arts commission was launched for artists and curators of all media to deliver one of four art projects around the themes of design and technology, arts and humanities, science and social science. Each project is based in one of the four UK nations: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The works were designed to demonstrate and celebrate the impact of OU research on society, promote innovation and excellence in the Arts and provide a memorable audience experience. The four commissioned artists in the ‘University of the Air’ project created a range of cutting edge work. Wales: Steve Geliot, Jo Fong, Tanja Råman – ‘Trajectory’ at Tramshed, Clare Road, Cardiff, CF11 6QP Friday 6th December Trajectory was a combined arts performance which told the story of a life transformed by the ‘University Of the Air’. It was an artistic collaboration using digital animation and live dance combined together, and presented in The Tramshed in Cardiff, a historic industrial listed building with its own extraordinary atmosphere. Trajectory took people on a multidimensional mind expanding journey. Artistic director Steve Geliot's career began with public art projects. As the digital age has unfolded the range of creative opportunities has developed, and Steve developed a strand of site-specific event-based work, using large scale projection in carefully chosen locations so that the effect is often very sculptural, and ambient at the same time. Steve worked on Trajectory together with the talented Rambert trained performer and choreographer Jo Fong, and award winning choreographer Tanja Råman who has an impressive track record of combining digital media with dance, to tell the fantastic story of the ‘University of the Air’ in Wales. Steve, Jo and Tanja explored the theme of social sciences through visual narrative and through animation and dance focusing on citizenship, relationships, psychology and power and open space A Youtube video of the comissions is available here http://youtu.be/5J_DJxwqMEs Download the booklet (pdf) The four art projects were recorded and have been made into a short film (30:16). The Trajectory piece runs from 14:37-22:00 mins
