What is the role of art exhibitions during wartime?

In this short video Dr Veronica Davies examines a catalogue produced for an exhibition of war artists' work, War Pictures at the National Gallery in 1942.  Looking closely at some of the illustrations from the catalogue,  Dr Davies explores how the exhibition came about under the auspices of the War Artists’ Advisory Committee and Sir Kenneth Clark.  She discusses what we know about the people who visited the exhibition from surveys and contemporary film, and what a catalogue like this can tell us about art and life in wartime Britain.
