Another Country: Nuclear War as False Memory

John Timberlake, Another Country: Nuclear War as False Memory

This paper will explore European fictions of nuclear war arising from the Cold War period, and aspects of their cultural legacy. Reviewing images of Britain’s nuclear test programme of 1953-1962, which I first encountered in the archives of the Imperial War Museum in London, I will consider these images as I found them, i.e., alongside files full of documentation of actual military engagements and battles, as if documentation of actual war. Some images, sounds or other media used in the following presentation are subject to copyright restrictions that prevent them being shown. In order to provide a complete record of the conference, these items have been blurred or silenced. Should we obtain permission to use these images, sounds and other media in the future the films will be updated.
